The SAHA Squirt B1 Red team, lead by coaches Bob Schoenrock, Thomas Vanek and Bobby Dustin, took second place at the Squirtacular in Blaine on Jan 22-25.

The Ponies cruised in their opening round game, a 5-0 win against Elk River, who was coming off a 5-0 shutout of their own the day before.

The same night, SAHA came back and took down Rogers 6-1.  Rogers came in red-hot, winners of its first two games over White Bear Lake 5-3 and St. Louis Park 7-1.

Saturday morning was a District 2 rivalry matchup with Mahtomedi. SAHA came out of the gates a little slow and the Zephyrs took an early 1-0 lead in the first. After a timeout to gather the troops, SAHA scored two in the first and handled the rest of the scoring en route to a 7-1 victory.

Sunday's championship game was a seesaw battle with the West Fargo Stampede, who cruised through their first three games and stormed out of the gates, taking a 3-0 lead at one point.

SAHA came right back with four unanswered goals and led 4-3 in the third, but West Fargo rallied with two goals and held off the Ponies flurry at the end to secure the championship by a score of 5-4.

The goaltender tandem of Oliver Deruyck and Kane Wandschneider (who still owes Coach Magill ice cream from a bet he lost a few years ago) were remarkable all weekend, allowing only seven goals in four games (1.75 GAA for the tournament).  The duo combined for a shutout in game one and were just as strong as the tournament progressed. Their great play will be relied upon as the Ponies move into district play in the coming weeks.

In addition to bringing home second place hardware, the Ponies' Danny McGrath, Luka Vanek and Henry Zirbes were rewarded with Squirtacular All-Tournament Team honors.

The Ponies will get a few days of rest and will be back to district play on Jan 30th against White Bear Lake.
